Pentecost Sunday - 05/28/23

On the Day of Pentecost, we celebrate that Jesus, our ascended, victorious king, shares the spoils of his victory with us, which is himself, his Spirit. We’ll have a multilingual reading of Acts 2 to simulate the experience of that first Pentecost.

Ascension Sunday - 05/21/23

This Sunday we celebrate the Feast of the Ascension. Jesus' ascension is significant because it means that there is one of us in heaven at the right hand of the Father, praying for us. Jesus taking our flesh into the Father's presence reminds us that we matter, that what we do matters.

This is also the Larlees' last Sunday with us before their Sabbatical, so we set aside time in the service for the vestry and Dave to pray for Chris, and for the vestry and Chris to pray for Dave and Rachel as we send them out.

Sixth Sunday of Easter - 05/14/23

Last Sunday Chris interviewed Dave and Rachel Larlee about rest. Not only did we get to hear more deeply about what God is doing to prepare their hearts and minds for Sabbath but also we got an opportunity to start thinking about how to apply Sabbath to our own lives. This Sunday Dave and Rachel share more specifically about how they plan to spend the summer.

Fifth Sunday of Easter - 05/07/23

This Sunday we will be hearing from Dave and Rachel about how the biblical Sabbath lays the foundation for sabbatical. Learning how to enter into rest with God is a gift that was woven into creation, beginning with the creation story in Genesis.

Fourth Sunday of Easter (Confirmations) - 04/30/23

This Sunday Bishop Philip will be with us for Confirmations, a time to intentionally pray over the people who are committed to living and serving alongside others as part of the St. Barts community. We also have the opportunity to lay hands on each person being received as a reminder that you are not on your own. Philip will also be preaching on John 10 where Jesus says "I am the good shepherd." The forgiveness Jesus the Good Shepherd offers us invites us to be a community of people that freely offer forgiveness to others.

Second Sunday of Easter (Baptisms) - 04/16/23

The first Sunday after Easter we always celebrate baptisms as a sign of new life. The passage we will be reading is from John 20, where we see that the disciples have locked their door in fear of any other violent reprisals. Jesus then comes in and declares peace over them, witnesses to them and sends them out to demonstrate God’s forgiveness.

Easter Sunday - 04/09/23

The Lord is risen! He is risen indeed! Join us as we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus with the children flowering the cross, some glorious gospel music and even a traditional Easter carol. Rev. Dr. Chris will be sharing how John’s gospel teaches us that the resurrection gives us a light that darkness cannot swallow, a life that death cannot destroy, and a love that hate cannot break.

Good Friday - 04/07/23

It is hard to imagine what is "good" about someone being crucified unjustly. But because we know the whole story, we know Good Friday is indeed good because it is God's Friday. It is the watershed of all history. It is the moment in which he became sin who knew no sin that we might become the righteousness of God. To enter into the contemplation of Jesus' supreme and atoning sacrifice, we observe the Stations of the Cross—14 scenes of Christ's walk down the path to Golgotha (called Via Dolorosa, or Way of Suffering) where finally he is lifted up to draw all men to himself.

Maundy Thursday - 04/06/23

Christ's "commandment" is commemorated on Maundy Thursday—"maundy" from the Latin "mandatum", meaning "commandment." At the Last Supper, Jesus instituted the Lord's Supper (our communion meal) with his disciples and washed their feet before giving them a new commandment-to love one another as he had loved them.

During the service, we will have a foot-washing ceremony where groups are free to come up and wash each others' feet. Following communion, the altar will be stripped and the cross veiled while Psalm 22 is read. The stripping of the altar symbolizes the humiliation of Christ at his crucifixion. A period of darkness follows, after which the congregation leaves in silence.

Palm Sunday - 04/02/23

This Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week with Palm Sunday! We start the service outside in front of the church followed by a triumphal entry into the sanctuary. As we wave the palm branches in the air, we remember the triumphal entry of Jesus to Jerusalem.

This service is slightly different including a dramatic reading of the Gospel passage, with some places for us as a congregation to engage with the story. This is a family service (childcare birth - 3yo), so we wanted to let you and your children know ahead of time that there will be some shouting during the reading to imitate the Jerusalem crowds before Pilate.

Fifth Sunday in Lent - 03/26/23

This week we come to the fifth Sunday in Lent, where we will be looking at the story of Lazarus being raised from the dead.  In our passage, Jesus shows us who he is most clearly by demonstrating that he is the resurrection, he is life.

These stories also remind us of our mortality. They remind us of our sin. Is there hope beyond suffering and death? As we seek deeper intimacy with God in this Lenten season, Jesus shows us through these stories that he came to call us out of death and to bring us life.

Fourth Sunday in Lent - 03/19/23

Two weeks ago we talked about who can enter the kingdom of God, last week we talked about the gift that Jesus brings as the giver, and this Sunday we'll talk about seeing the kingdom in Jesus’ actions. John 9 explains how people are unable to see Jesus' good works for what they are because of their blindness. To see clearly, we need healing and dependence on Christ.
