Today we will be talking about the story between a samaritan woman and Jesus. This story is in some ways opposite of last weeks because this conversation happened in the public, inviting others to come and hear. We will continue to explore what Jesus has to say about the gift of the Spirit and about worship.

At our Ash Wednesday services, we talked about the true heart and mindset behind whatever you might decide to do for Lent—whether it's fasting or taking on a spiritual practice. Lent is not a season where we set aside the good news of grace; it's a time when we remember we have a gracious Savior who forgives and loves and has already broken the bonds of our sin. For the first Sunday in Lent we will look at the temptations of Jesus in the wilderness. We start here because it captures Jesus' humanity, yet also, his perfection, and we get to see how he chooses to respond in those moments of temptation.

In our passage this Sunday is from Matthew 9, Jesus talks about how the harvest is plentiful yet the laborers are few. We can often fall into the misconception that if we just had the next best thing or just more of this other thing, then everything would work. Yet, what Jesus is sharing in this story is that He is the one that guarantees the harvest, and all we are called to do is to send people out.
We are going to be thanking God for the leadership that Becki Howard has provided St. Bart’s through all the different seasons over the years and commissioning Jenn Crider, our new worship leader. We are also going to have a moment to pray for Rev. Chris Myers before he leaves for England next week to defend his dissertation.

Last Sunday we celebrated the Epiphany, remembering the magi who journeyed from the east to see Jesus. Their intention to worship Jesus tells us something about who he is and why he has come. Jesus’s identity and his mission is what Epiphany is all about, and this Sunday we will see John the Baptist point to Jesus and say, “This is the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.”

As we all walk into 2023 this Sunday we hope that you are able to take time to reflect on what the Lord has done in your life over this past year just as we have been reflecting on the changes and growth of St. Barts. What things are you grateful for? What was really difficult? Have you missed the work of God? And now coming next is the second Sunday of the Christmas season, also called The Holy Name. We will be taking the time to remember Jesus as a faithful member of the covenant of Israel—His name means Savior and reflects His mission.

This Saturday for the Christmas Eve candlelight service we recognize that the Lord began to prepare for the coming of His son from the very beginning. What power that the God of creation has made Himself known in the form of helplessness, dependence, a baby. Plus we get to see the nativity enacted by the children of St. Bart’s! A huge thank you to Katie Lemming and Cristina Ballard for all their hard work in preparing the children for this special evening!

Isaiah 35 reminds us that He will strengthen and restore His people. This draws me to think about the vessels, the people, in my life who have been an integral part of uplifting me in times of weakness. Who are the people in your life who have intentionally poured into you?

This Sunday is Christ The King which ends the church calendar or church year. Where the church calendar begins and ends is significant for how we think about Christian worship and our faith in following Christ. Christ The King is a gathering point of the meaning of the Christian life. All of our life hope and all of our expectation is set on the kingship of Jesus. But what does it mean to say that Christ is the king? It’s the idea, hope, and expectation that God would raise up the line of David and that the king would rule forever, but not just king of the Jews, but king over all the world.
