Being Led by God

I saw her walking down the stairs at our college gym.  She thought I was a nice guy, but not really worth her time.  I had already demonstrated my ineptness at a relationship with her in the past.  But as I saw this girl walking by, I knew I was going to marry her.  Something told me she would be my wife one day no matter the odds stacked against me.

Have you ever had the feeling that you were being led to do something? Maybe you’ve sensed a nudging to participate in a certain area of service, maybe you feel the need to reconcile a relationship or make things right with friends or family, or perhaps you know you need to change some patterns of behavior or rhythms of life.

If you’ve experienced something like this, you’re not alone. Many people get a feeling similar to this. An inner voice that says, “I should really look into this,” or, “I should pay attention to that.”  That’s not unusual because when we look at the Bible we see that God, in his relationship with men and women just like us, he guides them, shows them where to go, what to do, and most importantly how to follow him.

For example he says, “I am the Lord, your God, who grasps your right hand; It is I who say to you, 'fear not, I will help you'” (Isaiah 41:13).

And, “I will lead the blind on their journey; by paths unknown I will guide them. I will turn darkness into light before them, and make crooked ways straight. These things I will do for them, and I will not forsake them” (Isaiah 42:16).

Now, he may not tell you which car to buy or which mutual fund to invest in, but God takes an active interest in our lives leading us by his Holy Spirit, through his Word, through the counsel of other Christians, and most often by common sense.

I’ll never forget the first time I felt that All Saints East Dallas should exist.  This leading was a combination of God speaking through his people, his word, his Holy Spirit putting in me a passion and love for the broader region of East and Northeast Dallas, and trusting him and following him to see if I was crazy or if he really was guiding me.  Ironically, the beginning of this vision for All Saints East Dallas started with that same girl I saw walking down the stairs at the gym in college 15 years ago.  I listened to her and have followed God.  And now we stand at the edge of launching Preview Services in just over 3 weeks.

How is God leading you? How have you sensed him nudging you? And more importantly, how are you following him?

You’re in my prayers this week.  I hope to see you soon.
